The Dark Ages were a turbulent time with Viking raiders attacking the Saxon lands, first for plunder, then for land, and finally for power. It was an age of attacks from the first raids such as at Lindisfarne, through to the Norman invasion in 1066.

No Viking re-enactment show is without an arena where the warriors will clash, be it training exercises, skills displays, or a full blown battle. And somewhere in the midst of the slaughter will be warriors from Ormsheim.

Our weapons are those of the period, sword, axe, spear and seax (a large fighting dagger much used by the 'SAX'ons). Shields and helmets protect us, along with mail for the richer more battle hardened veteran.

Depending on the size of the show combat can be anything from a small skirmish at a local show, to a full battle involving the whole of The Vikings society. There are even special events, such as the Hastings events, that draw people from around the world.

But do not worry. They may be real steel but our weapons are BLUNTED for safety. In Addition hands and heads are protected by gloves and helmets. Safety and training are major concerns and no warrior enters the arena without having gone through extensive training to help ensure both they and the crowd are safe from harm. Training officers and Society tests ensure a high level of competence and skill amongst our warriors.
